Join the Frederick Soil Conservation District for a Conservation Tour on August 7, 2008. The tour will visit several outstanding Frederick County farms, including Paradise Stables, the Sugarloaf Alpaca Company and Hedgeapple farm. The farms that you will see have implemented a variety of conservation practices that complement their operations and protect the soil and water resources on the farm.
Paradise Stables is a large, state of the art horse facility specializing in gaited horses. They offer horse boarding, training, and management clinics on the farm at their premium facilities. Paradise Stables has worked closely with the District to implement conservation measures while developing the facility. A manure storage structure, heavy use areas, and watering systems will be emphasized during the tour.
The Sugarloaf Alpaca Company raises and breeds show-quality huacay and suri alpacas. The farm began operations five years ago, and has bred and shown many award winning animals. While at the farm, we will look at pasture management, a watering system, and a heavy use area lane.
Hedgeapple Farm operates an angus beef operation. Beef is marketed at an on farm store. We will tour the restored log cabin store at the farm and discuss the pasture management practices used on the farm to produce high quality grass finished beef products.
We will also tour an active construction site in Frederick City to discuss the newest techniques for erosion and sediment control, and stormwater management. The District will highlight its efforts to improve inspections and enforcement on development projects in the county.
The tour will start and end at the District parking lot at 92 Thomas Johnson Drive Frederick, Md. The tour bus will depart at 9:00am and return at 2:30pm. Lunch will be a barbeque chicken buffet and is included in the $10 registration cost. Interested persons should contact the District by telephone at 301-695-2803 x 3 to make a reservation for the tour. Reservations should be made by August 1, 2008.
