The National Champion Red Elm (Ulmus rubra) is found in Frederick County behind Frederick High School.  This tree was probably growing on the site when the original school was constructed.

Judging for the Big Tree Contest is based on the height of the tree, crown spread, and circumference at 4.5 feet off the ground.  This National Champion is 95 feet tall, has a crown spread of 95 feet, and is 17 feet 10 inches in circumference.  Besides this elm the National Champion Honey Locust resides in Frederick County.
