On June 21st, 5 students from Walkersville High School placed first at the 17th Annual Maryland Envirothon. The team members included: Lindsay Keeney, Chris Higgs, Chris Keiser, Evelyn Michael, Hanna Poffenbarger, and alternate, John Ward. Walkersville High's Science Teacher, Sue Faibisch was the coach along with team advisor, Barry Burch. As a team, called the "Faibfive" completed (5) 30 minute exams relating to Maryland's Natural Resources and Alternative Energy. Those exams were related to Aquatics, Wildlife, Forestry, and Soils. The students also conducted a presentation on Alternative and Renewable Energy sources and their uses in Maryland.

In late July, these same students represented Maryland in Geneva, New York at the 2007 Canon Envirothon. This competition had 53 teams participating from Canada and the United States. Some of the teams came from Nova Scotia, Arizona, Oklahoma, Manitoba, and Georgia. The Maryland team placed 16th among those 53 teams competing. Students had the opportunity to interact with natural resource professionals, visiting a 5,000 acre private wildlife refuge, and learning about the importance of conserving and protecting our natural resources. Congratulations Walkersville!

The Maryland Envirothon program is an natural resources education program sponsored by the Maryland Association of Conservation DIstricts. In Frederick County, the Frederick County Envirothon Program is sponsored by Catoctin and Frederick Soil Conservation Districts.
