Catoctin Forest Alliance (CFA) Raises Money for Scholarship

Submitted by Angela Craig, CFA Intern

This past year, the Catoctin Forest Alliance has continued its commitment to preserve and promote the health of the Catoctin Mountain forest lands for the benefit of present and future generations.  The CFA works closely with the State and National Parks, as well as local private land owners, on a variety of preservation and education projects.

Most recently, the CFA raffled off a live evergreen tree, provided by the Autumn Ridge Tree Farm, to raise money for the Environmental Scholarship Fund managed by the Community Foundation of Frederick County.  The drawing took place on November 27th.  National Park Service Ranger, Jeremy Murphy, who was the first recipient of this Scholarship award eleven years ago, drew the winning ticket.  Karen Dosch of Greencastle, PA was the winner.

Ranger Murphy, currently of Emmitsburg, MD, was a graduate of Catoctin High School.  He went on to graduate from Penn State University in 2002.  Murphy said, “The scholarship helped me buy books for the first semester of college.”  He stated he was happy that the Catoctin Forest Alliance (formerly the New Forest Society) has grown into an organization that can do bigger things in the future.
