Greetings!

Summer 2010

Summer is a great season to be outdoors with friends and family. Consider spending an afternoon hiking through Frederick County's mixed hardwood and northern hardwood forests, where you can photograph wildlife in our watershed and observe nesting birds. Or how about a round of golf? You can visit a local golf course that is improving its aesthetics with warm season grasses (and more), while also benefiting water quality and wildlife habitat!

With our recent heat wave, you may prefer the air-conditioned indoors. You can still actively enjoy and protect your local watershed! Find out how you can help plant trees in Maryland; investigate a Fish Mystery that is affecting the Potomac River and its tributaries; or become more familiar with the County's new Comprehensive Plan and Growth Management Initiative- all from the comfort of your home.

School's out for summer! It's been an eventful year for Frederick Couty Public Schools (FCPS).The school district made great strides towards its 20% tree canopy goal through tree planting and protection efforts. FCPS also received a $500K grant (through Frederick County's Office of Environmental Sustainability) for new solar systems for two high schools. Several classes had the opportunity to raise and release trout. And believe it or not, students weren't the ones to receive report cards this year- the Chesapeake Bay's health received a C-grade this year!

Visit our calendar of events and our homepage for additional MCWA news and opportunities.

Despite the longer daylight hours, these summer months always seem to fly by. With whatever you choose to do with your days...

Enjoy!
