Jefferson, Maryland - After showing the award-winning documentary film, “An Inconvenient Truth” in early February to help build awareness of the impact of our lifestyles on the earth, the Environmental Committee of the Jefferson Ruritan Club shared a variety of environmental project ideas with the more than 50 neighbors attending the film showing. Jim Carpenter, Chair of the Environmental Committee, explained that the club plans to offer affordable, high quality rain barrels to those who participate in a workshop on April 24th conducted by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB). Other projects in development include a rain garden that would help slow down and filter polluted storm water; planning for a walking and biking trail to connect Jefferson’s residential areas; an energy audit of the Ruritan Community Center; exploring the feasibility of cooperative purchase of electricity; stream sampling along near by Catoctin Creek that has the lowest biodiversity rating of all the streams in the State; an organic community vegetable garden; and participation in the community supported Big Sweep trash pickup event on April 21st.
