Luscious Local Food

____________________________________________

Enjoying farm fresh produce and other specialty food items grown right here in Frederick County is one of the outstanding pleasures of summer.  How much local food have you tasted so far this summer?  Are you tuned into what is in season?  Do you know where you can pick your own berries? Who has new potatoes?  When the local tomatoes or corn will be ripe?

Farmers markets are a great place to see and taste and become a believer in fresh local produce.  See what is in season.  Eat fruits and vegetables at their peak.  Most don’t compare to the vegetables that have traveled 1,000+ miles to your supermarket.

If you’re like me, you are on a learning curve.  You connect enthusiastically with producers along your normal routes.  Others who produce favorite foods you gradually come to know and appreciate.  My husband and I love eating freshly picked strawberries (just finished) and flavorful, ripe blueberries and raspberries (coming soon).  You may want to consider choosing home delivery of locally available milk, cheese and eggs, finding a local favorite vineyard, sharing a side of beef or splitting a lamb with a friend.  There are many opportunities to taste summer pleasures – and save a lot of fossil fuel and atmospheric health in the process!

How about it?  Join the fun and savor the pleasure.  Its easy and rewarding. Frederick County has a great web site that links you to many local growers.  .  They also have published a Farm Guide 2007 brochure that gives lots of excellent information about area farms.
