Our friends and neighbors from the Audubon Society of Central Maryland launched their 2008-2009 Sanctuary Nature Walk series on September 20th with a Butterfly Walk!
This "inaugural" walk was not down Pennsylvania Ave. in DC. Rather it traveled through the beautiful Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary near Mount Airy. More than 30 participants of all ages searched for the various butterfly species to which the Sanctuary plays host. They also caught and tagged 40 Monarch butterflies as part of the Monarch Watch program.
Over the years, more than 50 kinds of butterflies have been observed at the Sanctuary and about a dozen species besides Monarchs were seen at the Butterfly Walk. The weather was perfect, so everyone enjoyed a sunny autumn morning.
The Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary is at 13030 Old Annapolis Road, West of Mt. Airy.

The next Nature Walk, on October 18, will be another great opportunity to be outdoors and see birds that are migrating through our area. This walk will be at the Fred Archibald Audubon Sanctuary, which is located at 6001 Boyer’s Mill Road, just one mile north of Rte. 144. Future walks in the series will be held on the third Saturday of each month (except December). In odd-numbered months they will be at the Audrey Carroll sanctuary and in even-numbered months at the Fred Archibald Sanctuary. In the event of inclement weather, the walks will be cancelled.Another way to support local wildlife and conservation activities and have a lot of fun is to feed birds at your own backyard bird feeder. And what better way to get fresh birdseed for your feeder than through the Audubon Society of Central Maryland’s biannual seed sale. The sale generates funds to help pay for conservation activities.
