In January 2010, the Adams County Water Resources Advisory Committee (ACWRAC) decided to move forward in creating a groundwater monitoring program in the Adams County, PA.  ACWRAC is a committee that was created by the Adams County Commissioners which includes federal, state, county, local, nonprofit and for profit water professionals to help inform the Commissioners of upcoming and priority water issues in the county.  The issue of groundwater protection and availability is a priority for the group because- like northern Frederick County- Adams County gets hit hard with development pressure.  The program will help provide a clearer picture of the availability of groundwater in the county so that the municipalities and county can make informed land use decisions.

The Adams County Conservation District and Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin and other committee members are planning the initial stages of the project.  Currently, the group has selected priority areas for well locations across the county and will be looking for landowners to voluntarily allow access to abandoned wells that have little to no influence of groundwater withdraw.  The twelve areas selected were prioritized by a few factors including geology, current well monitoring, development pressure, and potential stressed & water changed areas.  Once wells are located within a priority area, the wells will need to be monitored to make sure they are not influence by nearby withdraws.  After monitoring wells are selected, the groundwater depth will be monitored monthly.
